Video: Preeya Kalidas Treasures ‘Love Between Us’

Preeya Kalidas is leading up to the release of her single “Love Between Us” and to hook all of us in, she has released the music video.

The song features the Bollywood classic “Ram Lakhan” making this number a fresh twist on East meets West. The song has been produced and co-written by Davinche and I am a fan.

The video shows Preeya being watched by paparazzi and she tries to keep her man under wraps. Preeya’s style and swag in the video are all her personality and she looks great.

I’ve waited to Preeya to wow me and after “Shimmy” and being dropped by her label, I wanted this even more for her and this song is definitely pointing her career in the right direction.

Here’s “Ram Lakhan” for the reference.

Preeya Kalidas Feels ‘Love Between Us’

Actress, singer, songwriter Preeya Kalidas has been dabbling in the arts for quite some time. Shifting focus to music, Preeya has now released the new single “Love Between Us.”

Preeya sets up this release by telling us all that this will be just one of three releases this year! From what we hear in “Love Between Us,” this songstress has some tricks up her sleeve. Discussing her new single, Preeya says, “Ram Lakhan was a classic Bollywood film I enjoyed watching when I was growing up. I’ve always wanted to work with music from this iconic film and was given the chance to on this song. I think the way that Davinche has produced it adds a real edge to the song and the early response on ‘Love Between Us’ has been brilliant.” Preeya is creating her own modern twist of Bollywood, Western fusion and I am a fan of what she is coming up with.

“Love Between Us” has been co-written by Preeya and Davinche, who has also produced the track. Davinche’s impressive resume includes works done for (previous work includes Tinie Tempah, Wretch 32, Cleo Sol).

In 2010, Preeya quit her fulltime television gig to pursue music. Preeya walked away with a record deal with Mercury Records released “Shimmy” featuring Mumzy Stranger.

The single was heavily promoted and Preeya found herself singing her song on so many platforms, yet the track didn’t resonate with fans and Preeya was in turn dropped from her label. This didn’t slow her down as she continued to record and collaborate with artists. Preeya looked hot and sounded great on Skepta’s track “Cross My Heart.” Between careers and finding her footing, Preeya headed back to Eastenders late last year, but continued the music career and now is strategically releasing songs.

“Love Between Us” will be followed up with a music video this month.

Preeya Kalidas Covers Beyonce’s ‘Party’

Preeya Kalidas jumps between singing and acting, but she is still focused on having a music career. As Preeya balances both jobs, she shares her cover of Beyonce’s song “Party.” The acoustic cover is a fresh take on the single.

Winners of the 2011 BritAsia Awards

BritAsia TV hosted their annual BritAsia Awards Saturday, October 1. Leading up to the event, fans were asked to vote for their favorite acts. The results are truly a reflection of fan favs because not all the deserving candidates won.

Best Newcomer: Garry Sandhu
Garry has had a big year with great songs, well selected features, and brilliant videos. Arjun would be my close second because his music and swag are phenomenal.

Best International Award: Satinder Sartaaj
I am very pleased that Sartaaj is getting recognition on the western scene and Miss Pooja isn’t the only name getting love.

Non “Asian Music” Producer: Kray Twinz
Not much to say here except there has to be a better title for this category.

Best Video: Pumbeeri
I think here the fun of the flashmob video trumped the full video productions of the other videos. “Sahan To Pyariya” Was a great video with music and a story all effortlessly sewn together.

Best Male Act: Garry Sandhu
Agreed

Best Female Act: Preeya Kalidas
I have no idea why the Desi scene kisses the ground Preeya walks on. Kee was on one of the biggest tracks of the year and Nindy Kaur has been to Bollywood and back with solo music. People always wonder why the ladies are a quite force on the Urban Desi scene…this is one reason why. No love for them.

Best Band: Jazzy B
Malkit Sigh performed at Lincoln Center, New York City. What did Jazzy B do?

Best Urban Asian Act: The Truth
I think every artist was deserving. The Truth dropped a few videos and tracks this year and has announced a couple collaborations so I’m proud of him on this win.

Best Single: Moorni
Agreed, a Bhangra tune that sounded nothing like the rest!

Best Album: Gabru Panjab Dha
JK is doing very well with his music in the U.K. and he embodies real Punjabi culture with his music.

Best “Asian Music” Producer: Panjabi MC
I liked The Raj, DJ Sanj was also a real contender.

Best Club DJ: DJ Kayper
DJ Kayper is the only Desi on the list I see as a club DJ who scratches and entertains.

Best Alternate Act: Nasha Experience
Best Songwriter : Satinder Sartaaj

Lifetime Achievement Award: Bhujhangy Group

My final thoughts are that the awards highlighted and focused more Bhangra, Punjabi acts. I think there needs to be an expansion of the Urban, Hip-Hop Desi scenes and a better platform for them to get some recognition and appreciation.

Preeya Kalidas on Asian Woman’s September Cover

Actress turned singer Preeya Kalidas is balancing a music and acting career with a dash of modelling. Check out her cover fr Asian Woman magazine’s September issue.

Preeya Kalidas Knows ‘It’s A Problem’

Actress turned singer, turned actress, turned singer (keep up people), Preeya Kalidas is back with her new single “It’s a Problem.”

Preeya Kalidas had been making appearances in music videos and then starred in the stage production Bombay Dreams. Fullfilling her acting dreams, Preeya starred on the U.K. soap opera Eastenders. After scoring and record deal with Mercury, Preeya left Eastenders to take on music.

Her debut single “Shimmy” bombed and Preeya was dropped by her label. Recently Preeya was back in headlines because she was headed back to Eastenders. Now this act has released the video for her new single “It’s A Problem.” Let’s see if Preeya can captivate audiences this time.

2011 UK AMA Winners

The highly anticipated UK Asian Music Awards took place March 10 and now we have the big winners! Though I was unhappy with many of the nominations, I put that aside as the event began. I weighed out the “competition” and mentally decided who I thought should win.

It’s not an ideal world and in the Desi scene apparently we don’t award success or quality, I can’t even say that the prettiest and sexiest were awarded. Let’s say they pick names from a hat. Shall we run through the winners?

Best Selling Single: PBN
The numbers speak for themselves here.

Best Club DJ: DJ Kayper
FINALLY! After years of nominations and no wins, Kayper gets the recognition she deserves.

Best Radio Show: Bobby Friction
I know your show :) I’ll leave it at that.

Best Alternative Act: Rumer
This feels like the Grammys all over…the response was, “who”?

Best International Act: Miss Pooja
I do love Miss Pooja, but this has been a relatively quiet year for the songstress. As for the competition; Miss Pooja you are light-years away from Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s talent and accomplishments, making him the rightful winner.

Best Desi Act: Jaz Dhami
Congratulations on going into hiding for a year and still managing this win. No new music (till Feb 14), no scandals, no interviews, no real appearances. Now that is skill!

Best Producer: Sukhshinder Shinda
I wasn’t impressed with Shinda’s album and think this should have gone to Aman Hayer.

Best International Album: DJ Sanj “American Desi”
A less than impressive list of nominees was assembled here, I personally prefer Gunjan’s album, but the whole category here was a fail.

Best Newcomer: Jernade Miah
Jernade was my choice for the win; it was between Jernade and Garry Sandhu. Unfortunately there can only be one winner.

Best Video: Jay Sean Ft. Nicki Minaj “2012”
Not going to lie, I can’t remember this video but with the budget Jay Sean has in comparison to the rest of the nominees, it better be the best.

Best Album: Panjabi by Nature “Crowd Pleaser”
From the batch I thought it would be between PBN and Panjabi MC so not too fussed about this.

Best Urban Act: Mumzy Stranger
Mumzy’s album disappointed me and I think it disappointed him too because he is already turning out new tracks from a second album. Menis is always bringing us top quality track, videos, and has branded himself quite well. Mumzy this wasn’t the right win for you.

Best Female Act: Preeya Kalidas
I am entirely confused on this win (let alone nomination). For those who do not know of Preeya, she was an actress on the U.K. program Eastenders who turned her attention to her music career. Preeya signed to Mercury Records and was set to debut with Mumzy on her track and expectation were high. Cutting to the chase, the single sucked and Mercury Records dropped Preeya.

Now tell me how the likes of Preeya Kalidas will beat out not only Kazz Kumar who is fantastic, but M.I.A.? Really?!

Best Male Act: Jay Sean
From the nominees, yes Jay Sean is the best.

Two seperate awards were given and I’m not sure the criteria. First is the Lifetime Achievement Award which went to Apache Indian. From what I gather, Apache talked smack about the UK AMAs in the previous year, but he was the first to perform this year and walked right up to father his award.  The next award is for Commitment to the Scene which went to Cornershop. I admire this group’s work, but I’m not sure if this award was appropriately given. Are they considered part of this UK Urban Desi scene?
